Aloha! Over the years, I’ve tried various methods to save money on groceries (YES, even the dreadful extreme couponing method, which I found to be too time consuming!); however, through the process of trial and error I’ve managed to find a few things that really do work for me. Today, I want to to share how I am able to help my family save money on groceries. It’s not an exact science and it does take some work and self control (I could seriously fill my cart with chocolate!) but I’ve found that if I stick to the following three things I can save some serious money on our grocery bills.
- Budget! Yes, you must give yourself a monthly budget! I have two kids, ages 7 and 4, but WOW they can put down some food! Haha. I read somewhere many years ago that a good rule of thumb is to spend about $100-$125/per person in your household per month on groceries and that’s worked for my family of four.
- Plan a Menu. You guys, this one is big especially now that both my kids will be playing sports and involved in different extracurricular activities. Note: I try not to stress myself out about cooking a meal every night during the week. That’s right! For example, if my kids have soccer practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I plan meals for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I simply make a little extra on those days to have leftovers on Tuesday and Thursdays. Planning my weekly meals helps me stick to my budget and it makes my life seem a little less hectic during those busy weeks.
- Only Go Shopping Once a Week. How many times have you gone to the store to pick up one item and left there spending so much more than you anticipated? It happens to all of us. This past year I’ve experimented with going to the store only once a week to help resolve this problem and it’s worked! My meal planning has definitely allowed me to get all the shopping out of the way in one day and I’ve found that minimizing my grocery store trips to just one day has exponentially helped me to stay on track with my monthly budget.
Do you have any tips that help you save money on your grocery bills? If so, please share! I’d love to read them! And if you decide to try some of my tips please come back and let me know if they worked for you!
