I wanted to share a few things I do to help keep my kids as healthy as possible throughout the school year. Let’s be honest – I know they’ll probably come home sick at some point; however, I feel like teaching my kids good habits can help keep them healthy and set them up for success.
How To Keep Your Kids Healthy During the School Year
- Make sure your kids get a good nights’ sleep. My kids go to bed every evening at 8pm. They are early risers so getting them to bed at a decent hour ensures they wake up feeling refreshed and ready to embrace their day.
- Eat a healthy breakfast. We started seeing a doctor last year for my son after his teacher mentioned he could have ADHD. We were lucky to have seen doctor who didn’t jump to conclusions and after some observations she suggested we make minor adjustments to his diet. We began integrating more protein into his breakfast and cutting out most sugars and we immediately began to see a change in his attitude and behavior. It was amazing how minor adjustments to his diet could make a positive impact on his learning.
- Teach your child proper hand washing techniques and how to cough/sneeze into the crook of their arm. I taught my kids to wash and scrub their hands while singing the ABC song. My oldest doesn’t sing the song anymore but it taught him to take his time at the sink. I have also taught them to sneeze into the crook of their arm, which helps germs from spreading.
